A mobile network experience report has just been released this October 2023 by Opensignal, an independent global standard for assessing user mobile experience. The data collection period started from July and ended this September, which resulted to DITO, Globe, and SMART being the top 3 with most mobile experience awards in the Philippines.
Philippine Mobile Experience Findings
Globe Awards
Becoming the first Filipino provider to win the new Coverage Experience Award by Opensignal with a score of 7.1 out of 10, Globe won the award with just 0.05 points ahead of Smart. This is one of the first mobile experience awards gained by Globe.
DITO follows with 3.06 points, which is already remarkable considering its status as the country’s newest mobile provider. The award Coverage Experience assessed the coverage area of populated regions provided from consumers on 2G to 5G connections. Globe subscribers turned out to have mobile signal on most places where people live, work, and travel.
Not only that, as Globe turned out to swipe all four video awards, proving that Globe users get the best experience when viewing on-demand and live video streaming here in the Philippines.
Earning the top place for Video Experience with 56.9 out of 100 and Live Video Experience with 51.7 out of 100 points, Globe beat DITO by 1.3 and 3.6 points. At the same time, Globe wins the 5G Video Experience with 72 points and 5G Live Video Experience awards with 66.3 points with Smart at the second place with 4.6 and 6 point-difference.
Lastly, Globe also won the award for 5G Games Experience with 73.2 points, beating Smart with 67.3 points.
Smart Awards
Meanwhile, Smart remains the undefeated winner of the Download Speed Experience award with a score of 27.2 Mbps. On the other hand, DITO has reduced its winning edge from 2.6 Mbps from the previous report to 1.4 Mbps. This is due to the fact that, while all three carriers’ ratings have grown since the previous time of assessment, DITO’s score grew by 3Mbps, while Smart and Globe subscribers saw gains of 1.8Mbps and 1.5Mbps, accordingly.
Smart also gained the 5G Download Speed as well as the 5G Upload Speed awards under the category of 5G experience. Claiming the first mobile network carrier to claim the 5G Coverage Experience award with 1.2 points out of 10, surpassing Globe’s 0.5 points.
Furthermore, Smart continues to be the undisputed winner of the 5G Availability award, with Smart 5G customers spending 13% of their time on a continuous 5G connection, compared to 10.7% for Globe 5G users.
Since the prior report, Smart’s advantage in 5G Availability has reduced by 2.9 percent points, while Globe’s has increased by a total of 1.5 points. This concludes the mobile experience awards of Smart with a total of five awards.
DITO Awards
DITO has been named the new overall recipient of the Games Experience award, overthrowing Globe, which has fallen to third place. DITO takes the top spot with a score of 63.1 points out of 100, edging out second-placed Smart by 1.4 points and Globe by 2.4 points.
This success was made possible by the impressively 12.4 increase in DITO’s score from the last report, while Globe and Smart subscribers increased with only 4.1 and 2 points, respectively.
It appears that it is not yet the right time for DITO to qualify for the national 5G results. Yet, among the four areas included in the examination of DITO users’ 5G experience, the Philippines’ youngest provider ranks at the top — either together or individually — for 5G Video Experience, 5G Games Experience, 5G Download Speed, 5G Upload Speed, and 5G Availability.
It is the clear winner throughout all four areas for 5G Download Speed but falls only slightly short of the same achievement for 5G Upload Speed, with Calabarzon, Central Visayas, and Metropolitan Manila as the single qualifiers.Â
It is also the clear winner in all four areas for 5G availability. Overall, DITO won Upload Speed Experience, Availability, and Consistent Quality awards in addition to the one mentioned above, gaining a total of 4 mobile experience awards.
Mobile Network Experience Awards
For the conclusion of the latest mobile experience awards, Globe just earned the most awards nationally, claiming six of them with four video awards, one 5G games award, and one coverage award.
Smart nearly comes next with five awards including its uncontested place for download speed award, as well as most of 5G awards. Meanwhile, DITO gained the remaining four awards at the top 3 for the overall mobile experience awards.
It is good to note that this is the first ever report on Philippine users’ mobile experience to feature new awards for Live Video Experience, 5G Live Video Experience, Coverage Experience and 5G Coverage Experience. Having the first two awards to assess the quality of real-time video delivered to mobile devices by evaluating video streams across carriers’ networks.
They evaluate a variety of technical characteristics, such as picture quality, video loading time, delay rate, and live replay offset – the time lag between the live event and the viewer seeing it on their device.
The coverage experience metrics developed by Opensignal estimate the coverage area of occupied regions, reflecting the range of mobile networks in places where people reside, work, and travel.
According to the official website of Opensignal, Globe was just awarded a 5G Global Rising Star in Opensignal’s 5G Mobile Network Experience Awards 2023. Globe users had the greatest year-on-year (YoY) percentage increase in 5G Games Experience in Group I (markets with a geographical area larger than 200,000km2), with a 30.3% increase.
