Recently, we just unboxed the newest OPPO A58 on our personal YouTube channel. I have been using it for almost a month so I will be sharing my experience with this phone.
Before we start, you can now buy this new affordable smartphone nationwide in local stores, as well as online in OPPO’s official store on Shopee, Lazada, and TikTok Shop for only PHP 9,999.

Display and Multimedia
Starting with the most obvious upgrade here on this phone is its display, which now has a larger size and higher resolution. From the 6.56-inch HD+ display of its predecessor, it now boasts a larger 6.72-inch FHD+ IPS LCD display. Its display also supports up to 680nits max brightness and 100% DCI-P3 color gamut.

Unfortunately, this phone still doesn’t have a high screen refresh rate, unlike other phones at this price point. Despite this, I still enjoyed watching videos and editing photos on this phone since it has high color accuracy and is not overly saturated.
As someone who likes watching and listening to music, I also liked my experience using this phone because it has dual stereo speakers. Although its sound quality is not as premium as my main phone, the speakers of the OPPO A58 don’t sound cheap. It is also a good thing that it still has a 3.5mm earphone jack.

Camera
One of the huge upgrades of this phone is the camera. From a 13MP main shooter, OPPO now equips this device with a 50MP main shooter. However, the secondary camera is still a 2MP depth sensor, while the selfie camera still uses an 8MP module.
Based on the photos I captured in this phone, its camera already produces decent and clear quality images. It’s just that I was kind of looking for more saturation in the photos. It also struggles in low light scenarios which is expected in budget phones.
On the other hand, its dynamic range and sharpness are great. Filming on this phone is also enjoyable enough, although it can only shoot up to 1080p@30fps and lacks stabilization. Still, the videos you will get on this phone are usable.

Performance
For its hardware, the OPPO A58 is equipped with the 3-year-old 12nm MediaTek Helio G85 octa-core chipset that has Arm Mali-G52 MC2 GPU. It is also paired with 6GB LPDDR4x RAM and 128GB eMMC 5.1 internal storage. Compared to its predecessor which only has a 12nm Helio G35 processor and 4GB RAM + 64GB internal storage configuration, this OPPO A58 is a huge upgrade.

Honestly, I love the user experience of the ColorOS. When I tried the OPPO A57 last year, I really liked the software. The hardware was a bit inferior, so thankfully, OPPO upgraded this device. The OPPO A58 only got a 271,746 AnTuTu benchmark score and a 6,766 Work 3.0 performance score on PCMark which is quite low for its price.

But even though this phone does not have the latest chipset, it still manages to run my daily tasks smoothly like browsing social media, shooting and filming, using Notion, listening to music, watching YouTube videos, editing photos, and light gaming. In a nutshell, it is a decent-performing smartphone, just don’t expect a midrange performance in this device.

I tried to play some popular games on this device like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Farlight 84, and Call of Duty: Mobile, and I experienced some performance drawbacks. I suggest adjusting the settings to the lowest possible settings to eliminate lags and frame drops.

Battery
Battery life is also important, so it is good to note that this device has a large 5,000mAh which is enough for daily tasks. In my usage, its battery life reaches up to 2 days. Meanwhile, it lasted 12 hours and 2 minutes in PCMark’s Work 3.0 battery life with 50% screen brightness.
It still arrived with 33W SUPERVOOC charging that is expected to fully charge the device from 0-100% in just 75 minutes. I just hope that OPPO has increased its fast charging support since most budget phones nowadays already offer 44W charging or higher. But in my testing, the device charges 20-100% in just 1 hour and 4 minutes.

Conclusion
Even though the hardware of this OPPO A58 is not exactly the latest and is not too powerful, I can still say that it is a decent phone, especially since it can do all my tasks smoothly. For me, it has the standard features you need in a smartphone. Besides, its upgrade to the predecessor is already big. So if you have an OPPO A57 now, this OPPO A58 is definitely a good upgrade.
If I were to be asked why I would buy this phone, my answer would be because of its software. Well, we can’t do anything with its hardware, so I’m only after its software. In my opinion, ColorOS is one of the best operating systems in Android, that’s why.
