Since its launch in 2019, it has provided consumers with the greatest camera features enabled by OPPO’s cutting-edge R&D in image technology.
The Reno Series continuously improves mobile photography and videography, from the 10x hybrid optical zoom and the Full Dimension Fusion (FDF) portrait video technology to a suite of self-developed AI algorithms. That is to optimize the shooting experience and allow users to record every moment of their lives in vivid detail.
With more than 50 million users across 60 nations and regions today, the Reno Series is well-known among fans for its outstanding photography capabilities.
Users of Reno have consistently given the company great feedback in the past, which has further encouraged them to keep improving their image technology so that each generation of Reno is even better than the one before it and gives them the finest photo and video experience possible.
About 40% of the images taken on Reno phones are taken after 5 P.M., according to OPPO’s research of this feedback and other user insights. This number is much higher—nearly 50%—for video. This discovery got them thinking about how they may better meet consumer demand for excellent image quality in low-light, nighttime settings.
Based on that, they started working on improving the portrait capabilities on the most recent Reno8 Series to unlock boundless photography capability that lets customers record every special moment in life with stunning depth and clarity.
Unlocking Unlimited Imaging Power with Dual Sony Flagship Sensors
As most people already know, it may be challenging to produce a good image in low light, especially if you’re attempting to take a clear, lifelike portrait. Facial blur and image noise are a couple of common issues in these circumstances.
One of the best methods to enhance the image and video quality is to address the underlying problem itself and find a way to boost the light intake of the sensor because many of these problems are a direct result of the environment’s lack of light.
On the other hand, changing the pixel arrangement is time-consuming and expensive. They chose the second course of action since the first alternative would have required compromising the user experience, and as a result, our RGBW sensor technology was developed.
As a result, each pixel is capable of detecting and distinguishing between the red, green, and blue signals as well as white. Every RGBW sensor sub-pixel may independently capture its picture data in favorable illumination without interfering with its neighbors. The four sub-pixels merge into one when the total amount of light is inadequate, resulting in increased light sensitivity that enables the sensor to “see in the dark.”
The RGBW sensor can capture 60% more light than a conventional RGGB Bayer filter array while reducing image noise by 35%. In low-light situations, the phone can snap photographs that are brighter, and clearer, and yet keep the proper color.
Finding the most efficient technique to run the Quadra Binning Algorithm was the next hurdle once the approach to the algorithm had been decided upon. The OPPO R&D team considered all the variables, including power consumption, compatibility, and overall performance, and concluded that the image sensor would be the ideal place to apply the algorithm.
In close collaboration with Sony, the Quadra Binning Algorithm was embedded into the sensor. The Sony IMX709 RGBW sensor was eventually introduced as a result. The IMX709 RGBW sensor, which was developed using 22nm technology, powers some of the sophisticated imaging features on the new OPPO Reno8 5G. It has the greatest power-to-performance ratio of any premium front camera image sensor now available on the market.
The main camera of the OPPO Reno8 5G also includes a premium Sony IMX766 50MP sensor. The IMX766 has a sensor size of 1/1.56 inches and pixels that can be doubled in size to 2 millimeters utilizing OPPO’s Quadra Binning algorithm. This allows for better light intake and crisper images.
In addition to low-light concerns, the backlight is another annoyance that may make getting the ideal photo harder than it has to be. Images shot in intense lighting frequently exhibit unusual ghosting effects on smartphones with standard camera sensors.
This is the outcome of the HDR process, which combines successive photographs taken at various exposures into a single image with a wider dynamic range. The ghosting effect results from the fact that not all of the items in the frame exactly line up when the photographs are merged because the content of the images varies somewhat between each exposure.
OPPO has included DOL-HDR technology into both the front IMX709 sensor and the back IMX766 sensor to get around this issue. With DOL-HDR, short and long-exposure photographs are taken “quasi-simultaneously” before being combined into a single frame image. This is different from standard HDR methods.
This successfully fixes the ghosting issues brought on by motion and enhances the dynamic range of the video by a factor of 4, creating the ideal balance between brightness and shadows. Every photo and video taken with Reno8 5G will appear brighter and crisper, whether you’re standing in front of a sunset or the peaceful light of the moon.
Powerful portrait features to make every night your night
Any smartphone camera is put to the test in night photography and videography. The OPPO Reno8 Series enables consumers the ability to take beautiful portrait videos in almost any setting thanks to its flagship sensors on the front and back of the phone as well as a variety of AI-based portrait functions.
Ultra-Night Video – Always Vivid, Always Clear
Imagine a beautiful cityscape at night. The street’s vibrant neon signs in the distance stand out sharply against the gloomy foreground. The Ultra Night Video technology on the OPPO Reno8 5G automatically detects ambient light and raises image brightness, improves color expression, and sharpens face features to bring out beauty in everything. A lesser phone would cast a shadow over these foreground elements.

This AI-enhanced feature is here to produce clearer, brighter, and more vibrant portrait videos on both front and back cameras, regardless of whether you’re filming at night or in dimly light environments.
Ultra HDR Video – Unfazed by Backlight
For any camera, shooting portrait videos in situations with strong lighting has always been difficult. Camera sensors frequently cannot manage the extreme brightness disparity between the scene’s brightest and darkest features. But this is no longer a problem thanks to DOL-HDR on the OPPO Reno8 5G.
HDR Video Comparison
The OPPO Reno8 5G will automatically switch to Ultra HDR Video when it detects a scene with a high dynamic range. This activates DOL-HDR, which processes each video frame with enhanced dynamic range and true-to-life colors to ensure that details in videos appear bright and clear in both bright and dark areas. It’s like carrying about a great painter who keeps refining their work by adding more and more fine details.
Night Portrait – Pro-level Photos at Your Fingertips
You may now add professional-caliber portrait effects to your still photographs with the new OPPO Reno8 Series. Anyone who has spent a lot of time taking nighttime shots will be aware that you need extra time to snap a picture in a dark setting.
The best photographs may be obtained by either slowing down the shutter speed to enable the camera to capture more light or by giving the different image processing algorithms enough time to complete their tasks. The time it takes between taking a photo and examining it seriously diminishes the appeal of mobile photography.
By adding two new features, the OPPO Reno8 5G reduces the time required to take a nighttime portrait by 39.7% when compared to the Reno7 Series. The industry-leading Turbo RAW technology, which may use an AI neural network to minimize the noise of all three R/G/B channels, is the second of these features. The first is the greatly enhanced light sensitivity of the twin flagship camera sensors.
Night Portrait Comparison
You may now take sharp nighttime portraits as you see them by pressing the shutter since photographs now emerge more immediately when you hit the shutter without a considerable wait.
Smarter natural portraits that accentuate the real you
Additionally, the new OPPO Reno8 Series offers greater possibilities for taking realistic portrait shots in a variety of settings. To recognize face characteristics and eliminate flaws like zits, acne scars, and sunspots, AI Portrait Retouching uses 193 facial recognition points.Â
It also automatically corrects skin tones and cosmetics without using any too-brightening or artificial brightening techniques. Based on research OPPO performed into the skin tone and aesthetic preferences of thousands of customers globally, this function has been improved.
We have included a beauty filter, brand-new for the OPPO Reno8 Series, to cover necklines on the front camera. You and your friends will have the courage to express your personalities and continue shining in any circumstance thanks to the algorithm’s unique retouching that is applied to each individual face in the photograph.
Spotlight your masterpiece
Smartphone cameras are ultimately measured against DSLR cameras. Even if the lens and sensor sizes of modern smartphones prevent them from taking photos that have the same depth of focus and bokeh effect as DSLRs, they may skillfully mimic this effect thanks to new computational photography algorithms.
To provide you with more control over the depth of field, OPPO’s engineers thoroughly examined the various depths of field offered by DSLR cameras and reproduced the adjustable aperture. The depth of focus and bokeh light spots in the background may be altered using 22 different aperture settings in Portrait Mode to produce whatever style or mood you like.
Main Camera Portrait Mode
Two features on the OPPO Reno8 Series allow you the ability to easily make your very own movie-like masterpieces if you’ve ever desired to advance your directing abilities. Hyperlapse is the first of them, which enables you to make futuristic time-lapse films while moving. It eliminates the constraints of time to give your movie new perspectives.
On the other end of the scale, 960fps AI Slow-motion renders everything in ultra-smooth slow-motion. Motion recognition, frame interpolation, and other AI techniques create a theatrical bullet time-style effect to your movies once you push the camera shutter, allowing you to catch every single moment as it develops.
Moreover, the new OPPO Reno8 5G, which is packed with outstanding camera functions, takes the Reno Series to a new level of portrait performance. The Reno Series, as the “Portrait Expert,” is the conclusion of our effort to deliver you the greatest camera and image characteristics needed to capture the beauty of everyday life precisely the way you see it.
