The country’s largest telecommunications company, PLDT, is stepping up its plans to deliver internet access to every public university by the end of next year.
Internet access to public university by PLDT
The plan, which would also help institutions’ students and faculty, has the support of the Private Sector Advisory Council and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT). It would extend coverage to places that are not easily accessible.
In order to provide students and faculty with dependable internet connections starting in 2022, the company, via its corporate business subsidiary PLDT Enterprise, recently activated 1,000 WiFi hotspots throughout 220 public higher education institutions in 60 provinces. Students now have better access to the internet anytime they need it, thanks to this movement.
Menardo Jimenez Jr., PLDT’s chief operating officer, stated that the company’s program aims to offer continuous access to digital education. He said, “Continued support is necessary to maintain this transformative initiative. We are calling for renewed efforts to make digital education accessible in all state universities by 2025. This vision aligns with the advocacy of our chairman, Manny V. Pangilinan, who has long been a champion of initiatives that promote education and digital transformation for Filipinos.”
PLDT stated that the program would soon be implemented in underprivileged and remote locations. Due to their poor accessibility, such locations were frequently not given priority, but with PLDT’s assistance, the impossible will soon become attainable.
Jimenez said, “Through this collaboration, we are shaping a future where all students, regardless of location, have access to the tools they need to succeed in a digital world.”
