There are visual masterpieces everywhere. With the launch of the vivo X80 Series – vivo’s technological masterpiece – Filipino photography enthusiasts may now capture professional-grade photos in a snap with only a few touches on their vivo X80 series smartphone.
However, other photography aspects must be considered in addition to a high-quality camera to create interesting stories using images. So, what defines a good photograph?
The most recent part of vivo’s Imaging Academy online masterclass gave aspiring photographers fresh perspectives and inspiration as freelance photographers and the creator of LANY’s vivo X80 Series posters Raul Romo discussed his experiences and techniques as a self-taught photographer.
Since he was 13 years old, Romo has been pursuing his passion for photography. He acquired the mechanics of photography through YouTube tutorials and his mentors.
Through YouTube lessons and his instructors, he learned the technical aspects of photography. Romo is the perfect example of learning beyond the boundaries of a classroom because from his experiences as a self-taught photographer, he was able to gain valuable life lessons.
These lessons helped him develop his own perspectives on photography and deepened his passion for the craft. The photographer had a lot to share with the audience at his workshop with such an interesting journey as Romo’s.
Good lighting, good composition, and a good moment
According to Romo, a great photograph must have these three components: good lighting to highlight your subject’s characteristics, a balanced and good composition, and a good moment.
These three elements may make or break a photograph, Romo advises his students, to pay close attention to them. For instance, using bright lighting or shooting in a place that is too gloomy can degrade the quality of a photo.
On the other hand, the composition is all about the smallest elements that, when combined, produce a perfect balance. To convey their message clearly, he recommends photographers be more careful about the elements they decide to include in a picture.
Last but not least, seeing a nice moment demands keeping an attentive eye since those moments may be as subtle as a friend smiling while watching a sunset or as strong as an action move at a sports game.
Romo noted that a beautiful image is made up of good moments and the observer’s capacity to recognize those striking moments.
“Trust in your point of view. When you trust yourself, that’s what makes a great moment a masterful moment,” said Romo.
Shoot, shoot, shoot!
The greatest way to perfect a skill or hobby like photography is through regular practice. The secret to becoming a great photographer is to never stop taking pictures.
“Be one with your camera and be one with your eye,” Romo said.
Moreover, consistent practice will not only help one’s skills grow but will also enhance one’s love for photography, which alters and modifies one’s perception of the world around them.
It’s not what you use, it’s how you use it
A camera and a smartphone camera differ in a few ways, but recent innovations in smartphone technology have made it possible for users to produce beautiful, even professional-looking photos with their mobile devices.
Romo conducted a picture session with a model in the third lesson of the master class, first with his studio camera and then with the vivo X80 Pro.
Playing with a prism block and a tulle fabric, Romo explored the phone’s ZEISS professional imaging capabilities and its anamorphic feature. The vivo X80 Pro produced images that were just as stunning as those produced by the photographer’s high-end camera.
In his last lesson, Romo instructs his students to go out with their friends, snap pictures with whatever camera they like, and even try playing around with props.
“When you take a photo, look at it from every possible angle. The more that you do so, the more that your eye and your style comes out. When you trust yourself, that’s when the most beautiful moments happen and that’s when you’re at your best,” he advised.
