We often hear the adage that it takes a village to raise a child. So, imagine the challenges that solo parents go through to care their child or children. Recognizing that every family is as diverse as the colors of the rainbow, 24-year-old Glenn Baloro wanted to empower solo parents to thrive despite their struggles.
Glenn, who is a proud member of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer plus (LGBT+) community, says his personal preferences do not hinder him from serving his purpose in society. On the contrary, being part of the LGBTQ+ community has helped him live a full life and has inspired him to reach out to those who face difficulties.
True to being a lakanbini – a play on the words lakan (male ruler) and lakambini (muse) – Glenn advocated for solo parents and helped ensure that they are given opportunities for growth.
Inspired by a friend’s experiences and struggles, Glenn saw the need to connect with solo parents and help lift them up, as they raised families on their own.
“#SalamatSaInternet, I am able to communicate more efficiently with solo parents and connect with more partners who can help them,” he said.
With PLDT and Smart Communications Inc.’s (Smart) reliable and fast connectivity, it was easier for Glenn to connect with barangay officials and other sectors that could help him advance his advocacy. Until now, he continues to link up with more organizations that can help provide solo parents with opportunities to improve their lives and livelihood.
For him, just like a reliable partner, the internet is an essential part of life, especially for those who champion the welfare of others. “Attending various activities for my advocacy and for my lakanbini duties, whether online or offline, means I must stay connected. Smart has never failed to give me a stable connection,” he added.
For Glenn the internet has helped him and the LGBTQ+ community in various ways. More importantly, he has been able to promote safe spaces for members online, educating more people about acceptance and being comfortable with diversity.
Smart, together with its parent company PLDT, are committed to extending the reach of its fixed and wireless networks to enhance further the customer experience in all parts of the country. The PLDT Group also prioritizes diversity, equity and inclusion, aligned with their commitment to help attain to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal No. 5: Gender Equality.
