Makati City Representative Luis Campos Jr. filed the new House Bill 7479. This will allow the National Telecommunications Commission to have the authority to fine telcos failing to provide standard internet service.
This year, a study found out that the Philippines has one of the most expensive internet services in the globe but constantly ranks into the slowest internet speed offered either in mobile or broadband. According to Speedtest Global Index, it shows that the Philippines ranked 110th for mobile internet with an average speed of 18.49mbps. While in fixed broadband, we ranked 103rd with a speed of 28.69mbps. Therefore, it is evident that we are losing the competition of internet speed.
However, this house bill will able to fine telcos who will fail to provide cheap and reliable internet service. The fine will amount to 1 million pesos a day, or 365 million pesos per year according to the report. So we can expect that our internet speed will surely improve in the coming days. This might be a great impact on internet services here in the country.
