Instagram’s Boomerang and Hyperlapse apps are now gone
To recall, Instagram released the Hyperlapse app on August 26, 2014, allowing users to produce hyperlapse and time-lapse videos. You can use the Hyperlapse for making good time-lapse videos and it also offered impressive video stabilization. After a year, they released the Boomerang which allows users to make a 1-second loop video. However, the Boomerang feature is still available in the Instagram Stories, which they added in 2016. We don’t know yet if Instagram will feature the Hyperlapse in its main app.
According to Apptopia data provided to TechCrunch, both applications are no longer available from the stores since March 1, 2022. The removal comes just days after Instagram announced on February 28th that it will no longer support the IGTV app. The changes show that Instagram is preferring to streamline some of its distinct services to focus on the main Instagram app.
In addition, Boomerang has 301 million lifetime downloads on both Google Play Store and App Store. While the Hyperlapse app only has 23 million downloads since it is only available to iOS devices. Surprisingly, even though Instagram has evolved into a one-stop-shop, Boomerang continues to receive 26,000 downloads every day.
“We’ve removed support for the standalone Boomerang and Hyperlapse apps to better focus our efforts on the main app. Boomerang is still supported in-app in Stories, and Layout remains a standalone app in the Store. We’ll continue working on new ways for people to be creative and have fun on Instagram.” Said Instagram spokesperson Christine Pai.
Moreover, Instagram currently allows users to access picture and video postings, Stories, short-form video content such as Reels. Besides, users can also do live video, online shopping, limited-time product drops, and other features.
