OPPO has revealed that they are collaborating with industry partners to develop Zero-Power Communications devices. The firm believes that this will become a major aspect of next-generation communications technologies for greater convenience, inclusivity, and sustainability.
Most portable electronic gadgets nowadays still operate with the use of batteries. Whereas battery technology has advanced significantly over the years, modern battery technology still has severe problems. It does have shortcomings in terms of the overall size, production cost, lifespan, ease of use, and environmental friendliness.
Zero-Power Communications technology
The OPPO Research Institute has published a new white paper on Zero-Power Communication. The paper investigates the technical positioning of Zero-Power Communication technology in the context of existing unmet demand in the IoT space. This is while establishing a future roadmap for the technology to develop in collaboration with other future communications systems.

Zero-Power Communication devices are battery-free, extremely tiny, ultra-low-cost, and consume very little power. These gadgets have the potential to significantly reduce the maintenance costs, waste, and pollution connected with existing electronic equipment.
“From the first to the fourth generations of mobile telecommunications technology, the telecommunications industry has gone through four technological leaps — from analog to digital, to data, and finally to broadband. Each of these leaps has been designed to deliver faster data transmission rates; however, over the next decade, looking at 5G technology and even further afield, we no longer believe that data transmission will be as big a driver in telecommunications technology. Instead, we believe that technology should evolve to deliver greater convenience and sustainable value for society as a whole.” said Henry Tang, OPPO’s Chief 5G Scientist.
“Zero-Power Communications technology offers a means for electronics manufacturers to remove batteries from their products, reducing their costs and environmental impact in the process. As such, Zero-Power Communications is one of our core focus areas as we move into the B5G/6G generation,” he added.

As a source of electricity, Zero-Power devices can capture ambient radio signals. Some examples of these sources are TV towers, FM radio towers, cellular base stations, and WiFi access points (APs). After collecting energy from existing radio waves, the gadget may modify ambient radio signals with its information and broadcast these signals outwards through backscattering communication.
OPPO has begun evaluating the feasibility of this technology and will slowly begin promoting this zero-power communication protocol for future use.
