Space-based cellular broadband service from Globe

AST SpaceMobile Inc., located in Midland, Texas, is developing the world’s first space-based cellular broadband network for mobile phones. In a press release, Globe stated that it signs a memorandum of understanding with AST SpaceMobile. The MOU with Globe will allow it to use cutting-edge satellite technology to expand its services across the Philippines.

The two firms will work together to provide the AST SpaceMobile wireless broadband service to the Philippines. Once deployed, AST SpaceMobile will be the country’s first satellite broadband service delivered straight to regular mobile phones. This partnership will allow rural areas to reach these telecom services.

Moreover, this space-based broadband service will support voice, video, data, and internet connections including 3G, 4G, and 5G signals. This will also be useful in providing connectivity during times of crisis, such as natural catastrophes and crises.

A huge help for rural communities

Gerhard Tan, Globe’s Network Strategy and Technology Enablement Director said that “Globe has always been a pioneer in bringing first-to-market digital solutions to empower Filipinos. This collaboration is another step in Globe’s continuing initiatives to provide digital connectivity to remote rural communities as part of its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It is our mission to enable inclusive economic growth and provide quality education and e-health even in remote and still unconnected rural communities,”.

“Space-based broadband, otherwise known as Global Mobile Personal Communications Services, or GMPCS, is the new frontier in connectivity. We are proud to take the first step towards the adoption of this planned breakthrough technology that could address the need for reliable and practical mobile broadband connectivity, especially in geographically isolated and connectivity-challenged areas in the Philippines,” he added.

Globe said that this partnership is part of its aggressive expansion to boost service across the country and deliver a #1stWorldNetwork.

To keep its industry leadership and competitiveness, the telecom said it is in negotiations with various cutting-edge technological businesses. This is to locate, examine, and evaluate new developing technologies.
