Since durability is now a growing trend in the smartphone industry, the OPPO A5 Pro 5G offers a high level of durability that makes it stand out in this price category. But what about its other features? Let me share my insights and experience with this phone, and you will know if its worth buying.
Camera
In terms of cameras, the OPPO A5 Pro 5G can already provide decent image quality since it has a high-megapixel sensor. It delivers detailed and well-balanced photos, especially in well-lit environments. For me, the colors in the photos are just fine—not dull like some phones in this price range.
However, for the selfie camera, don’t expect outstanding image quality since it only has an 8MP sensor. The photos tend to be a bit soft even when beautification is turned off, and sometimes, the texture appears like a painting, especially on the face. But for capturing memories, this camera is more than enough.
As for video quality, it’s just on the “OK” side since it can only shoot at 1080p@60fps and lacks optical image stabilization. At this price point, it should have at least 4K resolution.
Here are some sample photos taken with the OPPO A5 Pro 5G:
Display and Multimedia Experience
One of the things I don’t like about the OPPO A5 Pro 5G is its display. As I mentioned in my first impressions blog, OPPO could have used a higher-resolution display. For its price, having only an HD+ resolution is simply unreasonable.
That said, watching content on this phone is still decent since the display is vibrant. However, details aren’t that sharp, and the low resolution is noticeable. Still, you can make do with it.
On the bright side, it has dual stereo speakers, which enhance the viewing experience, and the volume can go up to 300%. However, the audio quality isn’t that premium—it lacks bass, doesn’t sound very clear, and the highs aren’t well-balanced.
It’s still usable outdoors since it supports up to 1,000 nits of max brightness, although it’s better to stay in the shade for clearer visibility.
Thankfully, it has a 120Hz refresh rate, unlike most OPPO A series phones, which are usually limited to 90Hz. So far, I haven’t had any issues with its high refresh rate, as it’s smooth and stable.
Performance
When it comes to performance, the 4nm MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset with a Mali-G57 MP2 GPU provides more than enough power for my usual apps. I had no issues browsing social media, doing light gaming, and even photo editing on this phone. The chipset is capable enough, making this phone suitable for students, delivery riders, or employees looking for reliable performance.
Multitasking on the OPPO A5 Pro 5G is also smooth since it comes with 8GB of RAM and an additional 8GB of Virtual RAM. This ensures seamless app transitions.
For gaming, as expected from its specs, it’s only capable of handling light games since gaming isn’t its main focus. Of course, I still tested Genshin Impact on it, and I experienced frame drops.
However, you can lower the graphics settings to make it playable and minimize those drops. If you mainly play Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Call of Duty: Mobile, or Honor of Kings, this phone can handle them without issues.
I’m not entirely sure if it runs on ColorOS 15 Lite since the settings only show ColorOS 15, but using this device feels lightweight due to its software. I’ve also received multiple software updates since I got this review unit.
Battery
The OPPO A5 Pro 5G has a long battery life, thanks to its massive 5,800mAh battery capacity. However, the battery isn’t as efficient since it has an IPS LCD, which consumes more power. Still, it provides enough battery life for a full day, so that’s good enough.
If you run out of battery, it supports 45W SUPERVOOC fast charging, so you can recharge it relatively quickly. However, I’ve noticed that most new phones now have battery capacities between 5,500mAh and 6,000mAh. It would be better if OPPO included a faster charger because, for a battery this large, 45W is starting to feel a bit slow.
Verdict
For a price of PHP 15,999, I don’t think the OPPO A5 Pro 5G justifies its features, as most of them can already be found in smartphones priced under PHP 10,000—especially considering its HD+ display resolution. With just a little more money, you could opt for the Reno13 F 5G or even the Reno12 F, which I previously reviewed and is priced at just PHP 13,999 at the time of writing.
Having a durable build is great, especially since many people are clumsy and need a tough phone, but this device should be a last-resort option when considering new smartphones. However, if you really want to buy it, just wait for a sale or for its price to drop.
